![]() Sometimes the scans would reveal one of these exploration missions. You flew throw an "Exploration Cluster" with a lot of stars (but the lazy dot-like stars, not the cool stars you see in other sector maps), and scanned the dots. It was basically a large number of automatically pre-generated maps with simple stories (scan 5 of 5, maybe fight some enemies along the way, or just fight enemies), but it was kinda unsatisfying. They used to have an "Exploration System" once called Genesis. The closest you might get is that several planets have a kind of "Patrol" mission, which most of the time will involve some kind of combat and a few anomalies to scan for crafting material. There are missions that story-wise involve exploration, but you never have "free" epxloration in as you fly around and just see what weird thing might happen there. The endgame (post-story) is sort of a money sink. However, it is still fun to fly around in a starship that you built. It would have been dead years ago if it wasn't Star Trek. It used to be that you had to pay to get a Tier 6 ship (the top level), but now there are several ways to get them without paying.Īs a stand-alone game, it isn't great. The space combat still feels pretty good with a couple different ways to play. You get several free ships as you level up with a ton of customization. The strength of STO is and has always been the space combat. The good thing about the story is that its F2P and you can realistically get through the entire story without paying a dime. Basically they're looking for excuses to have near constant wars and battles so you've got gameplay content. The story as a whole is kinda insane in a WoW sense. Denise Crosby (Yar/Sela), Chase Masterson (Leeta), and René Auberjonois (Odo) all have a fair amount of content, while almost everyone from Voyager and DS9 (except the captains) and some TNG cast have at least small voice acting parts. There is a fair amount of voice acting from the cast. It wasn't exactly stunning when it came out, almost 10 years ago and it shows its age now. Keys are sold for special in-game currency which can be earned through grinding but the studio clearly wants you to pay real life money for it. While you're lower level and getting new ships and combat skills regularly, it's still pretty fun but on high levels it's just stagnant. Warp in, have a space battle, beam down, have a ground battle, beam up, have another space battle, report in to the mission giver. The main mission loop gets pretty monotonous. Space combat would be way more fun with proper 3D controls (when I last played it, you couldn't roll and pitch control was limited to +/-60° or so which might be sufficient if you're flying a less agile science or explorer ship but when you're on a combat-oriented ship equipped with forward-firing cannons, it's stifling). After that, it started being boring for me, I haven't started it up in a while. It starts out fun, especially as you advance to admiral (and thus get a new ship every few levels).
